The drive from Lincoln National Forest to Joshua Tree National Park in California would have been a really L-O-N-G drive, so we had decided while planning this trip that we would stay in a hotel in Phoenix for one night to cut the drive in two. We also chose Phoenix because it had one of the top 5 zoos in the US, and we love visiting zoos.
Did you know that the Phoenix Zoo is only open from 7am-2pm during the summer? We got there early and left by 11:30. I knew that it would be hot, but 111 degrees was crazy. If I were the animals, I wouldn’t show my face either with that heat.
This was pretty much the view we saw of most of the animals. It was pretty entertaining!
The main attraction at the zoo that we had planned was to feed the giraffes. It was AMAZING! Feeding the giraffes cost extra per person but was well worth it. They are beautiful animals! They have the longest tongues ever. We were feeding a mama giraffe who was 26 years old.
Then we toured the rest of the zoo. The Phoenix Zoo has a really great kid’s area with a Big Red Barn. Luke was able to brush and pet several goats.
The baboon didn’t seem too interested in having any company, and this small deer-like Dik-dik reminded us of the dogs we left back home, particularly our scrawny black one.
We ended our zoo trip with Luke crawling into a faux clam shell and climbing like a spider on a rope web. I would consider the Phoenix Zoo a definite top 5 on my list.
