It’s Spring Break in our area, and we decided to take a little trip. Our first official camping trip as a family. This trip was actually a bunch of “firsts” for Luke: first camping trip, first steam locomotive ride, and of course, first campfire with smores.
I made reservations back in January for the Texas State Railroad in Rusk, Texas (east of Waco). They have restored an old steam locomotive and passenger cars to enjoy a leisurely 3-hour round-trip ride through East Texas. The bonus was that they had a campground on the same land as the train depot. We played it safe and only camped two nights, since we didn’t know how Luke was going to react to sleeping in a tent. Boy were we surprised! He had no trouble sleeping through the night. He played with bugs and dirt and went on little adventures during the day.
After out first night, we boarded the steam locomotive to take a little ride. The train ride was like going back in time. Our first-class car had cushioned bench style seats with a table in-between. We had the sweetest car attendants who would bring us drinks and snacks the whole trip. Just after departure, the train was “robbed” by some outlaws who jumped on the train and “took” money from the passengers (all for a good cause). These outlaws had a shoot-out at the depot where we had lunch. Of course, The Lone-Ranger was there to save us all. Poor Luke didn’t know what to think of the guns shooting blanks and started to cry. We had to tell him that they were just pretending.
After lunch, we headed back to the Rusk Depot to make it a round-trip. We all had such a blast! Thankfully we didn’t have to get back in the car to drive the 5 hours home because we camped for one more night. A short trip but worth every minute!
Now we know that Luke will be able to handle a longer camping trip with ease. He’s such a trooper and little outdoorsman.
If you like camping and seeing the sites, you’ll have to follow us here on the blog as we take a 3-week camping trip this summer from Texas to California and back.
